Black Panther 2 will soon begin its marketing campaign, although some early merchandise leaks have revealed the first looks of Namor, Atlantis, and Wakanda.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will probably start its main marketing campaign after the release of Thor: Love and Thunder, but some merchandising leaks offered a first look at aspects of the film, from Namor and Atlantis to Wakanda itself. It has been rumored since the start of production on Black Panther 2 that the sequel would introduce Namor’s character to the MCU. Now, with these leaked merchandise, the sub’s inclusion in the film is all but confirmed.
Namor’s presence, in turn, means the film will also introduce another major fictional city from the Marvel Universe, the underwater city of Atlantis. Given that Wakanda itself is a fictional country and the sequel will apparently focus on the country as a whole, it makes sense for Marvel Studios to pair this with Atlantis and Namor in the MCU. One thing that will be interesting to see, however, is how Marvel will approach the portrayal of Atlantis, given the huge popularity of Aquaman and the similarities with the DC property.
Early reports indicated that Marvel will differentiate its own version of Atlantis by imbuing the city with Central American culture. This provides evidence to reports that Mexican actor Tenoch Huerta will play the role of Namor in black panther 2. This all seems to have been all but confirmed by leaked merchandise for the upcoming film, which provided a first look at Namor’s design, as well as new looks for the film’s Atlanteans and Wakandan characters.
First look at the MCU’s Atlanteans
The first revelation comes in the form of the Atlanteans. From the leaked merchandising image, black panther 2, which will feature Iron Man’s MCU replacement, provided the first look at Attuma, an Atlantean from Marvel Comics. Attuma in the comics was an Atlantean warlord who is usually presented as an enemy of Namor, providing further evidence that the latter can be presented as the anti-hero of the comics as opposed to a villain. Attuma is shown similarly to the Marvel Comics Atlanteans, following the art style of their blue skin. The leaked image shows Attuma sporting an array of naval armor and weaponry, ranging from what is apparently a hammerhead shark skull as a helmet to a fin-like spearhead. The costume also provides further evidence that Atlantis is based in Central America, with Attuma’s outfit containing intricate embroidery and a choker similar to ancient Mayan clothing. Black Panther 2 design from Namor the Submarine
After the look at Attuma, the first glimpse of Namor in black panther 2 was shown. Namor’s design is notably different from Attuma’s, being much more toned down in its approach, at least since the first of two outfits featured for Namor in the leak. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever merchandise. The first costume shows Namor wearing a simple bathing suit with many ornaments on the arms and chest. The greaves, bracers, and chest piece are aesthetically similar to Attuma’s, from the gold patterns to the intricately designed chest piece.
The second outfit is also similar, but with one notable difference. Namor wears a helmet with an animal design, similar to Attuma’s. The only other differences from the second look at Namor are the visibility of the wings on Namor’s heels, a staple in the comic version of the character that also grants Marvel Comics Namor certain powers. Other than that, the second outfit just looks more armored, with three cape-like tendrils also flowing from Namor’s back.
A reveal of Namor’s look hints at the character’s origins in the MCU, which will apparently be similar to his comic book counterpart. In the comics, Namor is an Atlantean-Human hybrid, with his mother being Atlantean and his father being human. Due to these origins, Namor has human-colored skin as opposed to the blue skin of the Atlanteans. It looks like the MCU version of Namor will continue this design choice, showing Namor as having tan skin while Attuma’s is blue. Check out the Namor images below.
Okoye and Shuri’s Black Panther 2 costumes
The final reveal comes in the form of Okoye and Shuri from black panther 2. Following the tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman in 2020, it has been revealed that black panther 2 would focus more closely on the fictional country of Wakanda and supporting characters from the first film, including Shuri and Okoye. Although the image of the two doesn’t reveal much about how their characters will differ from the original. Black Panther, it’s always cool to see their looks for the upcoming sequel. Okoye wears an outfit very similar to the first film and dons her Dora Milaje uniform, indicating that her character plays a similar role in black panther 2, being the main protector of the ruler of Wakanda.
Shuri, on the other hand, wears what appears to be a simple purple tracksuit. While this doesn’t offer any indication of her character, especially since Shuri would have been Black Panther after T’Challa, the purple coloring is interesting. As shown in T’Challa’s Black Panther costume, the armor powered up with a purple glow before releasing the energy in a purple explosion. Shuri’s purple outfit could be Marvel subtly hinting at her character’s future as the next Black Panther. While it might be overkill, the tie-in is interesting, to say the least, with the other merchandise reveals that only serve to whet the appetite for the next one. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
